Resumo

This paper explores the Irish ancestry of the seventeenthcentury
Portuguese writer fr. António das Chagas (1631-1682) in light of the
biographical information provided by fr. Rafael de Jesus’s Vida, e Morte do Varão
Apostolico Fr. António das Chagas (1683) and Manuel Godinho’s Vida, virtudes e
morte de Fr. Antonio das Chagas (1687) about his mother, D. Helena de Zúniga,
and his maternal grandfather, captain D. Terêncio de Zúniga, who took refuge in
the Iberian peninsula in the context of the persecution of the Catholic aristocracy
of Ireland.
