Language and Law / Linguagem e Direito (LL / LD) is a leading international bilingual, bi-annual online journal that publishes original research, review articles and book reviews on the fields of Forensic Linguistics / Language and Law, in Portuguese and in English. The journal is completely electronic and entirely open access. LL/LD publishes articles across the whole spectrum of the discipline and from both practitioners (e.g. chiefs of police, public prosecutors, professional translators and interpreters, expert witnesses) and academic researchers (lawyers and linguists). Submissions are welcome in in any area of forensic linguistics / language and the law, including, but not exclusively:

Language and Law: Legislation; comprehensibility of legal documents; analysis and interpretation of legal texts; legal genres; history of legal languages; legal discourse; multilingual matters in legal contexts; discourse analysis of legal resources; language and disadvantage before the law; language minorities and the legal system; language rights; power and the law; intercultural matters and mediation in legal contexts.

Language in the Legal Process: Interviews with vulnerable witnesses; communicative challenges of vulnerable witnesses; police interviews; investigative interviewing; language testing of asylum seekers; bilingual courtrooms and second-language issues; courtroom interpreting; courtroom interaction; courtroom translating; courtroom language; police language; prison language; language addressed to judge and jury in common and civil law courtrooms.

Language as Evidence: Authorship analysis and attribution; plagiarism; speaker identification and voice comparison; compiling corpora (statements, confessions, suicide notes); computational author identification or profiling; consumer product warnings; language as evidence in civil cases (trademark, contract disputes, defamation, product liability, deceptive trade practices, copyright infringement); dialectology and sociolinguistics; semantics; pragmatics and speech act analysis.

The articles published in Language and Law / Linguagem e Direito are double blind peer-reviewed and screened for plagiarism. It is fully open access, under CC BY 4.0 DEED licensing. In submitting an article, authors cede to the journal the right to publish and republish it in the journal’s two languages, Portuguese and English. However, copyright remains with authors. Thus, if they wish to republish, authors simply need to inform the editors and acknowledge their original publication in Language and Law / Linguagem e Direito.

Scientific Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism

Manuscripts should clearly indicate the bibliographic sources of works cited. The authors must ensure that the references used are accurate, comprehensive and clearly identified, and must seek permission from copyright holders to reproduce illustrations, tables or figures. It is the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure that they have obtained permission to reproduce any part of another work before submitting their manuscript for publication. They are also responsible for paying any copyright fees that may be charged for the use of such material.
The journal operates a strict anti-plagiarism policy. Therefore, it reserves the right to submit all manuscripts for analysis by similarity detection software (known as 'plagiarism detection software) or by experts.
