Contributions to the characterization of utterance purpose clauses in Contemporary European Portuguese
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to characterize the utterance purpose clauses in European contemporary Portuguese, stressing their specificity by contrast with content and syntactically integrated purpose clauses. The analysis of the data, based on semantic and pragmatic criteria, leads to a sub-typology involving (i) utterance purpose clauses expressing a purpose discourse relation at the illocutionary level and (ii) utterance purpose clauses that qualify the speech act itself. In both cases, only the dynamics of interaction can explain their functioning. An analysis of the compatibilities of utterance purpose clauses with different classes of speech acts is also provided in this paper.
