A igreja de Santa Maria da Virtudes : diversas temporalidades de um local de devoção

Abstract

This ·paper aims at introducing the sanctuary’s history, since 1427, when the future  King. D. Duarte, started to protect a small chapel buil by shepherds, after the hierophany of a miraculous Virgin 's image. We are going to follow the evolution of the sacred place, that is, to trace the material conditions such as donations, buildings-- which enabled its religious intencionality. This work is divided in two parts: one based on writen documents, and the other concerming the must recent local archaeological excavations.
