Abstract

Portuguese Roma music is currently undergoing a significant transformation, moving from the private sphere of community life into wider public and cultural visibility. Drawing on a sociological understanding of historical invisibility, this article examines how artists including Nininho Vaz Maia, Diego El Gavi, La Família Gitana and the project Zah! are reshaping Portuguese Roma rumba through engagement with hip-hop, urban pop and flamenco. It considers the role of digital platforms in musical production and circulation, the Roma community’s historical relationship with flamenco, and the ethics of transcultural exchange. These developments are redefining Portuguese music and Roma representation within national culture.
