Resumo

Art as a Technology of the Self in People with Visual Impairment: the role of imagination in their experience. This study explores how art can function as a «technology of the self» in people with visual impairment, as conceptualized by Foucault, and the role that imagination plays in their artistic experiences. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six people with visual impairment. The data was qualitatively analyzed using thematic content analysis. The findings indicate that the most prominent function of art is emotional regulation, followed by self-knowledge and the construction of personal identity. Participants emphasize the importance of mediations such as audiobooks, image recognition technology, and social mediation to form mental representations and build an artistic experience, especially when visual limitations prevent direct access to traditional stimuli. The work highlights the functional reorganizational capacity of biological and cognitive systems and the need to reconsider the role of imagination in the creation of aesthetic experiences in non-visual contexts.

Keywords: art, visual impairment, imagination, technology of the self.
