INNOVATION AND DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN LIBRARIANSHIP AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

Information Science has undergone a radical transformation in recent decades due to digitization and the advancement of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. These innovations have redefined the access, organization, and management of information, creating both opportunities and challenges for professionals and academics in the field. The convergence between Information Science and Communication Sciences has been key to optimizing processes and developing advanced tools that efficiently manage large volumes of data. Mass digitization has expanded the availability of informational resources, transforming information into a strategic asset in the data economy. Digital transformation has altered the architecture of storage and content dissemination systems, adopting distributed models based on cloud technologies and process automation. Platforms like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform facilitate data storage and processing, driving the development of digital repositories and preservation systems. However, digitization presents challenges such as interoperability between systems, especially in multilingual and multidisciplinary contexts. The lack of universal standards complicates data exchange and the creation of shared catalogs. Additionally, metadata quality and technological obsolescence are ongoing concerns. Innovations like blockchain offer solutions for verifying the authenticity and traceability of digital records. Projects like MIT's Blockcerts use blockchain to certify academic degrees, ensuring their integrity and transparency. It could be observed that digital transformation has reshaped Information Science, providing innovative tools for data management and preservation. Nonetheless, it is essential to address technical and ethical challenges to consolidate an efficient and accessible digital ecosystem.
