INDEXING OF FLUTE SHEETS IN THE CONTEXT OF BRAZILIAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

Abstract

This paper analyses printed sheet music available in the catalogues of the Library of the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP) and the Library of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). The research aims to answer the following question: how are flute scores indexed in university library catalogues? The general objective of this research was to analyse how flute scores are indexed in the catalogues of the university libraries of ECA/USP and the UFMG library. The specific objectives of this study are: (i) to review the literature on the topic of indexing flute scores; (ii) to compare the informational representation achieved by indexing scores in the catalogues of the USP and UFMG libraries. In this context, this study is justified by its contribution to Knowledge Organization, as it addresses a gap between music and Information Science, allowing librarians to improve their technical skills, and understanding the elements that make up scores, given that scores are complex and little-studied documents in the aforementioned field. Furthermore, the research will contribute to musicians and those interested in the topic of flute scores, as efficient retrieval of musical items impacts their production and/or research, ensuring greater accessibility, efficiency, and visibility in well-represented collections. Furthermore, the research will enable the preservation of cultural heritage and its dissemination, as score indexing is a tool that ensures the retrieval of cultural material, given that scores constitute elements of memory or "sites of memory," as Pierre Nora (1997) points out. In summary, the article's methodological procedures are presented in sections, which defined the research as exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative approach and a comparative analysis research method. The theoretical framework discusses the score indexing process; the elements that make up a score; and flute scores. The results and discussions, as well as the final considerations regarding this study, are also addressed.
