disaster management in a university archive in the face of an extreme climate event

Extreme climate events have caused significant impacts on documentary collections, revealing institutional vulnerabilities related to risk management, preservation practices, and the recognition of the strategic role of archives. This article presents a situational case study of the actions undertaken by the Central Archive team of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora in response to a disaster caused by a severe storm in a departmental archive in 2025. Using a qualitative approach and documentary analysis, the study discusses the emergency, corrective, and preventive measures adopted, as well as the results achieved in terms of the recovery of documentary heritage, the strengthening of archival management, and the expansion of access to information. The results are analysed in light of the archivist’s information literacy and its relationship with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, highlighting the contributions of archives to the Sustainable Development Goals.
