POTENTIAL AND CHALLENGES OF SUSTAINABILITY IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF BRAZIL FROM AN INSTITUTIONAL PLANNING PERSPECTIVE

The article analyses sustainability in the institutional planning of public university libraries in the Northern Region of Brazil. The objective is to identify the potential and challenges of university libraries based on the incorporation of sustainability in the development plans of Higher Education Institutions considering the Sustainable Development Goals. This is a qualitative study with an exploratory and descriptive approach, based on the content analysis of institutional development plans. The analysis focuses on identifying guidelines, objectives, and actions related to sustainability. The results indicate that sustainability is present in the documents as a principle, value, and strategic guideline linked to regional development in the Amazon. However, there is a gap in the specific planning of libraries that limits the operationalisation of the guidelines. Therefore, although university libraries have the potential to contribute to sustainable development, this role still needs to be further institutionalised in the planning of information units.
