WHICH INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS ARE WORKING IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN PORTUGAL, BETWEEN VOUGA AND TAGUS?

Based on the clear intention to characterise and understand the human resources existing in public libraries in Portugal, with a view to reflecting and identifying the reality in this field, a non--experimental and descriptive research study was developed, following a qualitative and quantitative approach based on mixed methods, starting from the universe of the Rede Nacional de Bibliotecas Públicas (RNBP), as well as municipalities with public reading services that are not part of this network. To this end, the public/municipal libraries in the region between the rivers Vouga and Tagus are chosen as an object of study, in order to assess who the information professionals working in them are, in the dimensions of professional category, gender, age, educational qualification, training areas, nationality and disability, as well as the degree of compliance with the RNBP Standard Programme. The results define a markedly ageing professional class, predominantly female, insufficient in number and undervalued in the context of local public administration.
