THE ROLE OF THE PARLIAMENTARY HISTORICAL ARCHIVES IN THE ASSEMBLY OF THE PORTUGUESE REPUBLIC

The aim of this research is to explore the role that the Parliamentary Historical Archive plays in the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic. The methodology adopted is qualitative, guided by the constructivist paradigm, using the documentary research method. First, a literature review was conducted on parliamentary archives within archival science. Next, a study was conducted on the history of the archive in the Portuguese parliament, complemented by an analysis of the functions, competences, mission and archival practices (intermediate and definitive archive) of the Parliamentary Historical Archive. The study concludes that the archive gained its prominent role and autonomy only in the democratic period after 25 of April. and it has a variety of information management responsibilities, from the photographic and audiovisual archives to the records management, among others, which allow it to incorporate its role as the ‘house archive’. Finally, there is a scarcity of literature on parliamentary archives, and further studies are needed due to the connection between this type of archives and the sovereign bodies of each country.
