THE POTENTIAL OF CYBERJOURNALISM ON TIKTOK
an analysis of the profiles of Rádio Renascença and Observador

This article examines how the platformisation of journalism is reshaping news practices, languages, and newsworthiness criteria on short-form video platforms, particularly TikTok. It investigates how the seven core affordances of cyberjournalism — hypertextuality, multimediality, interactivity, immediacy, ubiquity, memory, and personalization — are reinterpreted by two Portuguese news organizations, Observador and Rádio Renascença. Adopting a qualitative and comparative approach, the study analyses 20 journalistic videos published on TikTok between September 1 and 7, 2025. The findings reveal two distinct adaptation strategies: an informational tiktokisation, characterised by factual reporting, brevity, and continuous updating, and an affective tiktokisation, marked by orality, empathy, and the reinforcement of institutional identity. The study concludes that cyberjournalism affordances do not disappear within platform environments; instead, they are structurally reconfigured according to TikTok’s algorithmic logic. These transformations generate relevant ethical, communicational, and epistemological implications, contributing to a broader understanding of the tiktokisation of Portuguese journalism and the evolving role of journalism in platformised media ecosystems.
