THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE GAZE:

DECOLONIAL AESTHETICS IN CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN AND PORTUGUESE ART

Abstract

The article examines how decolonial aesthetics transforms the field of contemporary Brazilian and Portuguese art by proposing new narratives that challenge Eurocentric hegemony and promote the valorisation of marginalized artistic practices. Grounded in theoretical frameworks such as those of Aníbal Quijano and Walter Mignolo, the study analyses the decolonization of the gaze, emphasizing the importance of recovering silenced sensibilities and knowledge. In Brazil, artistic production highlights issues related to the African diaspora, Indigenous cultures, and the memory of slavery. In Portugal, artworks critically reflect on the colonial legacy and its contemporary implications. The article concludes that decolonial aesthetics not only revisits art history but redefines it, pointing toward more inclusive futures in the creation, circulation, and reception of art.

Victor Tuon Murari, Universidade de São Paulo

É Doutor em estética e história da arte pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estética e História da Arte da Universidade de São Paulo e pelo Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo. Desempenhou o papel de curador na exposição conjunta Projetos para uma vida cotidiana moderna no Brasil, 1920-1960, organizada no Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC USP). Seu trabalho combina pesquisa acadêmica, curadoria e consultoria em artes visuais, com enfoque especial no modernismo e na arte contemporânea brasileira.
