Abstract

This article explores the East Art Map project, developed by the IRWIN collective, positioning it as a critical response to the taxonomic hierarchy of universal Western art history (Močnik, 2006). The project, divided into two phases, incorporates into the art historical narrative the artistic practices and connections from Eastern Europe that were previously silenced. As an artistic research practice, the East Art Map aligns with contemporary art theory categories such as research-based art (Bishop, 2023) and the educational turn (Rogoff, 2008). Politically, the East Art Map integrates the spatial turn (Piotrowski, 2012), emphasizing the need to consider geopolitics in the context of artistic practices as a means of producing knowledge that escapes the constraints of colonialism.
