Abstract

This paper outlines a research trajectory that links art collecting with a visual history of fashion in Buenos Aires between 1870 and 1914. It explores the points of intersection between these two areas of study, as well as the methodological challenges and contributions that fashion analysis—as a form of mass consumption shared across social classes—offers to cultural history. Key aspects considered include the impact of imported goods on both phenomena, the significance of craft-based practices in home dressmaking, and the potential of material analysis of garments. In dialogue with visual and printed sources, this approach enables a deeper understanding of clothing cultures during a specific historical period.
