The Young Eduardo Lourenço
Abstract
When Eduardo Lourenço released his first philosophy book in 1949, Heterodoxy, a ninepointed constellation dominated the Portuguese philosophical and literary universe against which he asserted: the neorealist affirmation; the Marxist philosophy of Bento de Jesus Caraça and Vasco de Magalhães-Vilhena; the concept of Reason by António Sérgio; the affirmation of the Portuguese Philosophy Movement by Álvaro Ribeiro and José Marinho; the still very much alive historical legacy of the Presence magazine; the affirmation of surrealism; the further affirmation of the Eagle (III Series) and the question of Teixeira de Pascoaes’ theory of saudade; the affirmation of the glorifying policy of Estado Novo policy; the European novelty of Existentialism.
