ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN THE AGE OF GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
a critical analysis of the challenges and opportunities for information professionals
Keywords:
Academic libraries, Generative Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence literacy, Information professionalsAbstract
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is profoundly transforming how information is produced, accessed, and used within academic contexts, presenting both challenges and opportunities for libraries and information professionals. This research critically examines the implications of integrating GenAI into academic libraries, focusing on ethical, social, and professional challenges, as well as opportunities for service innovation and skills development. Using a qualitative methodology based on a narrative literature review, the study identifies institutional guidelines, emerging applications of GenAI in library services, and essential competencies for information professionals. The findings highlight the central role of AI literacy, continuous professional development, and the adoption of ethical and responsible principles. The study concludes that, despite the challenges identified, GenAI offers significant potential to strengthen academic libraries as key spaces for learning, innovation, and equitable access to knowledge.
