The black and the beautiful: from the Song of Songs to Shakespeare’s Sonnets
Abstract
This paper discusses Shakespeare’s aesthetics of blackness as a radical interpretation and response to a disputed translation of the fifth verse from the Song of Songs, casting light on the Renaissance transition from negative theology to negative capability.
