In recent years, numerous projects within Portuguese historical research have prioritized the development of databases and digital cartography, along with ensuring their online accessibility. These digital resources have proven essential for supporting new research and for establishing updated standards of knowledge and approaches to significant historical sources. Simultaneously, these digital tools have enabled recent historiographical production to become accessible to a broader audience beyond academia. Within this context, the present paper offers a brief reflection on the creation of a medieval digital toponymic atlas, centred on the 1258 Royal Inquiries. It aims to highlight some of the potential benefits of this unprecedented initiative, which opens a promising avenue for future research.
