Abstract

This article constitutes a conclusive synthesis of the dissertation Textile Brands in Portugal (1883-1933), focusing on the analysis of the evolution and challenges of textile trademarks. Between 1883, with the enactment of the «trademark laws» and 1933, the development of textile trademark registrations was non-linear, reflecting economic fluctuations and the adaptation of companies to new legal requirements. With the gradual consolidation of national enterprises, textile manufacturers increasingly relied on registered trademarks to enhance the value of their products in both domestic and international markets, demonstrating a diversification of visual identity strategies. However, in the face of growing legal and administrative complexity, challenges inherent to the consolidation of industrial property in the Portuguese textile sector persisted.
