Abstract

Geo-consciousness and territorial culture. Education for GeoCapabilities — Powerful
knowledge implies a solid and open disciplinary education that allows young people to think
about the world, to insert themselves in the world, to dialogue with the local and global community.
To accomplish this, the teaching of Geography has the mission of boosting the acquisition
of geo-capabilities. This article has developed a discussion on how to give power to geographic
knowledge through geo-capabilities education. It discusses how curricula should be
oriented to prepare young people with this kind of knowledge and, finally, how, through robust
and transversal knowledge, it can strengthen the geo-consciousness that stimulates in communities,
in societies, the culture of the territory. By systematizing the ideas in the recent literature
where the debate on geo-capabilities is taking place, we propose an interpretation where the
ideas of geo-capacity (to be developed at school, in the curriculum, in the young people), geo-
-consciousness and territorial culture (to be developed in the community, in society) come together.
By adopting the perspective of geo-capabilities in the curricula of Geography teaching,
new horizons are opened for young people to experience the plenitude of their citizenship and
their humanity. By making use of this knowledge, young people will be sources of geo-consciousness
and territorial culture (local and global).
