Abstract

This article focuses on the phenomenon of illegal enslavement in nineteenth-century Brazil. Through a case study based on letters published in Pernambuco newspapers in 1850, it seeks to analyze the socio-racial boundaries surrounding legalized slavery and the crime of reducing a free person to slavery, as defined by the 1830 Criminal Code of the Brazilian Empire. The paper examines the circumstances of the illegality of an enslavement while reconstructing fragments of the story of Francisco, a young man whose disappearance led his father to believe he had been kidnapped to be enslaved.
