«Oh! qual te hás feito, / Mísero Portugal!...»: "Decline and Death of the Homeland in the Poem Camões (1825), by Almeida Garrett"
Abstract
This essay explores the theme of the “death of the homeland” in nineteenth-century Portuguese literature, through the contrast between the heroic and noble portrayal of Luís de Camões and the image of a decaying and dying homeland in Almeida Garrett's epic-dramatic poem Camões (1825). The discourse on the nation, throughout the poem identified with Camões, spans the century and is later revisited in the literature of the so-called “Generation of 70”. This study seeks to understand the influence of Garrett’s portrayal of Camões on the works of Antero de Quental, Oliveira Martins, Eça de Queirós, and Guerra Junqueiro.
