Sancho Pires de Froião and his Family: Ecclesiastical Paths and Influence in the Cathedral Chapter of Porto (Late 13th Century)
Abstract
The reign of King Dinis marked a period of calm in the relationship between the Crown and the Church. Nevertheless, the monarch implemented a strategy to control the dioceses by interfering in episcopal appointments, aiming to consecrate bishops who were personally aligned with him. During this time, several aristocratic families from the king’s inner circle entered the ecclesiastical sphere, seeking social advancement through the occupation of prestigious positions. In the case of Porto, the first change of bishop during the reign of King Dinis occurred in 1296, with the consecration of Sancho Pires de Froião as Bishop of Porto.
This article aims to determine whether this election brought about changes in the patrimonial volume and in the occupation of ecclesiastical positions within the cathedral chapter, as a result of the familial influence of this bishop.
