The argument developed by Max Weber (1864-1920), suggesting religion as a factor of social change, is still present in the academic debate. The ties between protestant ethics and the success of capitalism in northern Europe have been discussed, underlining the role of moral discipline associated with the effects of the Reformation in the emergence of a rational organization of work and commercial and industrial capitalism from the 17th century onwards.
Without ignoring this debate and the successive historiographic reformulations, this journal issue aims to challenge multiple dimensions of religious experience, whether institutional (all the long experience of organizing communities and territories, including the domain of functional hierarchies), intellectual (from theology to the doctrinal formulation), and devotional (inner conversion, spirituality, and holiness), always in a long-term perspective.
On the one hand, it will be important to analyse religious reforms - movements and practices - and the changes they entail - theological ideas and ecclesiastical structures - (sometimes led by individuals whose actions it is important to evaluate). On the other hand, it is urgent to understand the spiritual life and the daily religious practices, whether at the prince's court or in the liberal and republican state; either within families or social groups (confraternities, brotherhoods, parishes) or at the level of individuals, considering different dimensions (age, gender, social status, place of living…).
Finally, this special issue welcomes proposals aiming to study changes occurred in the relations within the Christianity (Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox), as well as between Christians and Jews, Muslims, and all those who, outside Europe, were the target of a Christianization project.
