The concept “border” has been used in many senses, namely to explore fields of research in different scientific areas, both from the humanities as well as from the so-called exact sciences, mainly when it is intended to approach the limits of any theme.

In fact, the evolution of the concept derives from the different use of the word itself, since the Middle Ages to the present. As early as the last century, Lucien Febvre stated that "frontier" is a word that is applied in the military domain and only in times of war, giving as example the situation of the Iberian Peninsula in Medieval Times when the border separated Christians from Muslins. Since then, several researchers (A. Lewis, R.I. Burna, W. Cronon, G. Jaritz, …) have dedicated themselves to the debate about border has meant throughout times and in various spaces.

Recently, the word has assumed frequently the meaning of limits (boundaries). e.g. the end of one territorial unity and the beginning of another, but it can also refer to other aspects of social, economic and cultural of mankind. And in in the building of the Modern State it was of primordial importance the creation of well-defined territories, with their own sovereignties. Today the concept is much wider, and implicates a variable quantity of inter-relations between two or more distinct parts a more global whole. Borders represent a living space, since they refer to exchanges and relations, either cultural, economic, military or others.

In fact, the theme border continues to provoke a reflection of the scientific community, especially in a period where the cultural permeabilities and the opening of territories to “foreigners” are widely discussed. In this context, one must be aware that in American English there are two words, border and frontier, that are translated into Portuguese, as well as in other languages simply as border. The first word usually has the classic meaning of limit between two states or two regions, meanwhile the second signifies the boundary between an explored area, e.g. an unknown area or zone in relation to what is already known and explored.

For these reasons, vol. 1 of História - Revista da Faculdade de Letras will be dedicated to debates that are still in the agenda, motivated by all order of reasons.

All the interested in this theme are invited to present proposals of articles that embrace any chronology and/or geography. Th objective is precisely to show the reader a wide group of articles that read in their whole provide a diverse perspective about Border(s), namely about:
