Point of View as a Transversal Analytical Category in Text: A Study Based on Intertextualities

In this article, drawing on the theoretical articulation between Alain Rabatel’s theory of Point of View (POV) and Brazilian Text Linguistics (TL) (Cortez, 2011; Cavalcante et al., 2020; Cavalcante et al., 2022), we propose adopting POV as a transversal analytical category of textuality. This study focuses on the relationship between POV and intertextualities, discussing how intertextual processes contribute to the representation of POVs – that is, perspectives, thoughts, actions, and opinions associated with a center of perspective (enunciator). Intertextualities are conceived here as dialogical relations between texts, genres, and styles, which may occur at different levels of explicitness, whether between specific texts (strict intertextualities) or across broader groups of textual instances (broad intertextualities), as argued by Carvalho (2018). Our proposal is grounded in Brazilian TL, which considers multisemiosis a constitutive feature of texts (Cavalcante et al., 2022). Accordingly, we conceive POV as a multisemiotic category, detectable not only in verbal forms but also across distinct semiotic resources. To demonstrate the analytical productivity of adopting POV as a transversal category, we analyze two electoral video advertisements. The analyses show that POVs may be materialized through intertextualities and may also emerge through different textual categories, thus confirming the transversal nature of POV. We argue, therefore, that POV not only engages in dialogue with other categories but also inscribes itself in them and becomes textually materialized through their articulations.
