Contributions of Mônica Magalhães Cavalcante to Textual Linguistics - A Tribute in her Memory

This text aims to present an overview of the contributions of Brazilian professor and researcher Mônica Magalhães Cavalcante to Text Linguistics (TL). The article examines the professor’s academic trajectory, arguing that her path not only reproduces but also actively constructs a TL trajectory. As both the object of study and the theoretical framework, the analysis draws on her published works available in journals and digital platforms, as well as her academic memoir submitted for promotion to Full Professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). Cavalcante’s work and contributions are analyzed across four main axes: (i) the consolidation of her theoretical foundation in textual studies, marked by a transition from syntax to text studies; (ii) her diversified and articulated attention to TL’s analytical categories, with emphasis on the categories of referentiation and argumentation; (iii) the interfaces that interested her, such as argumentative and techno-discursive approaches; and (iv) the inseparability between research and teaching. The analysis of Cavalcante’s trajectory reveals coherence and contemporaneity, showing that she collaboratively built – alongside her advisees and other researchers in the field – an interdisciplinary textual approach closely connected to social practices. Mônica Cavalcante’s legacy lies in both her publications and her profoundly human teaching practice, which unites research and pedagogy and has resulted in the formation of a broad and influential community of scholars who perpetuate and expand her work.
