Queer/Cuir Discourse as Resistance: Affirmative Praxis as Transformative Potential

This article examines how queer/cuir discourses resist cisheteronormative hegemony through affirmative discursive strategies that, rather than limiting themselves to negating norms, assert deviant existences as practices of resistance. We begin with the constitution and shifts in the term queer as insult, identity, and field of study – while also attending to cuir as a discursive and political alternative in Latin American contexts –, acknowledging the relevance of this trajectory to the ways in which the discursive practices of these subjects are constituted. In dialogue with a wide range of scholars, including Fairclough (2016), Austin (1990 [1962]), Butler (2018 [1990]), Preciado (2022), and Valencia (2023), this study analyzes four texts from different genres and discursive domains to demonstrate that queer/cuir discourses are articulated in opposition to hegemony through a movement that is not merely one of negation but rather of reasserting the very twist from which they originate. Understanding the specificity of queer/cuir resistance as an affirmative praxis that transforms discourse into a space of existence, presence, and political claim is, therefore, to contribute to reflections on resistance from more active and powerful paradigms of social transformation.
