Abstract

This article presents a reflection on the approach to historical texts for language research and teaching. To this end, it first presents a notion of text and a definition of historical text from the perspective of Sociodiscursive Interactionism. Next, there is a discussion of some of the problems that should be considered in research that requires the analysis of historical texts. Finally, the paper offers some ideas on the treatment of historical texts in teaching situations. These reflections are part of the development of research and teaching intervention projects within the international and interinstitutional group ‘Historicity of Texts and Language Teaching’ (HISTEL). To illustrate the central issues of this reflection, the paper draws, on the one hand, on textual examples that are part of the corpus of a research project on twentieth-century Brazilian advertising and, on the other, on texts that have been used as teaching materials in the training of teachers of Portuguese as a foreign language in Argentina.
